- No data is ever uploaded to any server.
- Removes GPS coordinates, dates, and device models.
- Files are permanently cleaned upon download.
Technical Notes
Image conversion quality depends on the codec, compression ratio, and color profile of the output format. Lossy formats like JPEG discard imperceptible data to reduce file size — at 80–85% quality this is typically invisible to the human eye. Lossless formats like PNG preserve every pixel but produce larger files. EXIF metadata (camera model, GPS coordinates, date) is preserved where possible, but some browsers and privacy settings may strip it during export. All processing happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly — no file ever reaches a server.

Why Remove Metadata?
The Invisible Threat in Your Photos
Photos taken with modern smartphones (iPhone, Android) and DSLRs often contain precise GPS coordinates (Latitude & Longitude) embedded in the file headers. If you share a photo of your pet at home online, you might be broadcasting your exact street address to the world.
- Stalking Risk: Strangers can map your daily locations.
- Assets Exposure: Real estate photos can reveal expensive equipment locations.
- Personal Data: Timestamps and device IDs can link anonymous profiles to real identities.
Deep Dive: Inside the Header
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard key-value pair system stored at the beginning of a JPEG file (before the image data itself starts).
Common Tags We Scrub
- GPS Tags: Latitude, Longitude, Altitude, Direction.
- Camera Info: Make, Model, Serial Number, Lens ID.
- Settings: Shutter Speed, ISO, Aperture, Flash Fired.
- Dates: DateTimeOriginal, DateTimeDigitized.
- Software: Editing history (e.g., "Adobe Photoshop 2024").
// Example Raw EXIF Data
Exif.Image.Make = "Apple"
Exif.Image.Model = "iPhone 15 Pro"
Exif.GPSInfo.GPSLatitude = "34.0522 N"
Exif.GPSInfo.GPSLongitude = "118.2437 W"
// This data identifies you!
Do Social Networks Remove EXIF?
| Platform | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook / Instagram | Yes | They strip data upon upload to protect users (and save space). |
| Twitter / X | Yes | Strips metadata mostly for privacy reasons. |
| Flickr / 500px | Often No | Photography sites often KEEP data so photographers can see camera settings. |
| Email / SMS | No | Sending a full size image often KEEPS all metadata. |
| Google Photos | It Depends | Keeps it for your organization, but may strip it when sharing links. |
History of Digital Metadata
The JEIDA (Japan Electronic Industries Development Association) established EXIF specifications in the late 1990s to help printers and monitors display digital images correctly. Originally just for technical details (orientation, color space), it expanded with the advent of GPS-enabled smartphones to include location tracking, unintentionally creating a massive privacy loophole in the digital age.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Original Backup: This tool creates a copy. Your original file on your computer remains untouched.
- File Size Similar? EXIF data is very small (often less than 50KB). Removing it won't drastically reduce file size like compression does.
- Thumbnails: Sometimes EXIF contains a tiny thumbnail image. Removing EXIF removes this thumbnail too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does removing EXIF data change the image quality? +
No. EXIF data is simply text stored in the file header (like a luggage tag). Removing it reduces the file size slightly (usually by 2kb - 50kb) but does not touch the actual pixels of the image at all.
Can I view EXIF data before removing it? +
Yes. On Windows, right-click the file, select Properties > Details. On Mac, open the image in Preview and press Command + I. You will likely see GPS coordinates and camera settings.
Does Facebook or Instagram remove this data? +
Generally, yes. Major social networks automatically strip metadata when you upload to protect users. However, email attachments, Google Drive, Dropbox, and smaller forums often KEEP the metadata intact.
Will removing metadata delete my photo date? +
It depends. Our tool removes the "Date Taken" metadata tag. However, your computer file system still has a "Date Created" and "Date Modified" for the file itself. But if you import the photo into a gallery app, it may no longer sort by the original capture date.
Does this make my photo 100% untraceable? +
It removes digital fingerprints like GPS and Serial Numbers. However, visual landmarks (a street sign in the background, your face) can still be used to identify location or people.
Is it legal to remove metadata? +
Yes, absolutely. It is your data and your privacy. Many professional photographers also strip metadata to hide their location or editing techniques.
Can I batch process multiple photos? +
Yes. You can clean an entire album of photos at once using our batch processing feature.
Privacy Guaranteed
We use WebAssembly technology. Your photos are processed in your browser, never uploaded to our servers.
